SD State Fair Barrels Gone Wild Barrel Racing Photos
Posted by admin | Filed under Rodeo, Sports
The South Dakota State Fair in Huron was in full swing and that meant barrel racing at the Hippodrome. This year’s event dubbed, Barrels Gone Wild, was no disappointment. I had a ring side seat at the competition with my camera ready. The racers were in tip top form as they rounded the barrels on the well groomed arena floor. The lighting was sporadic giving me a challenge to shoot the event. I turned my ISO up to 800 and hand held all shots creating some scratchy and grainy pictures which were fitting of these competitors as they left it all in the fresh dirt. All photos were taken with my Canon 20D using my 20mm f/1.8 lens. Post production was done in Photoshop CS3 using non-destructive methods on a Windows 7 platform.

Demolition Derby- Plankinton, South Dakota

Holy Moly! It was Demolition Derby time at the annual Pheasant Festival in Plankinton, South Dakota over the past weekend. There was plenty of jaw dropping metal crunching mayhem! The best fun you can have in a vacant field just outside of town. I was high in the stands this time putting my 70-200mm L series lens to the test. It performed flawlessly. I hope you have as much fun looking at these as I did shooting and processing them. All post production was done in Photoshop CS3 using Topaz Adjust plugin on a Windows 7 OS.

Pheasant City Fight Night, Redfield, South Dakota

Fight night in Redfield, South Dakota! Mixed Martial Arts at it’s best was on display at the National Guard Armory this past Saturday night. I had the pleasure of working with Knock Out Events and had a ring side seat for a few of the fights. I then moved to the back of the auditorium to get some compelling shots of the “cage” and the ever enthusiastic crowd. The energy was real and so was the blood! This is an event I recommend anyone witnessing in the future. All photos were taken with my Canon 20D and usual variety of lens.

Aberdeen, South Dakota BMX

Bicycle Motocross is alive and well in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Remembering the days of when I was a kid and raced BMX, I thought what a great way to spend the afternoon. I found Aberdeen had a track and packed my photography equipment and headed up there. They have a great facility that is well organized and maintained. The track officials were very accommodating to me and I walked away with some great shots. Using my Canon 20D and 70-200mm F4 LSeries lens I was in the middle of the action.

Irene Rodeo, Irene, South Dakota

Saturday night in Irene, South Dakota was Rodeo night this past weekend. The rodeo persevered through a torrential down pour, tornado warnings, and one crazy clown. The action was non-stop and the lighting conditions changed constantly keeping me on my toes. This rodeo was definitely worth the drive. I shot the rodeo with my Canon 20D and brand new lens, 70-200mm L Series F4. The lens did not disappoint as I caught many shots on the far end of the arena. One more outing and I should be completely comfortable with it. All post production was done in Photoshop CS3.
