Aberdeen, South Dakota BMX

Bicycle Motocross is alive and well in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Remembering the days of when I was a kid and raced BMX, I thought what a great way to spend the afternoon. I found Aberdeen had a track and packed my photography equipment and headed up there. They have a great facility that is well organized and maintained. The track officials were very accommodating to me and I walked away with some great shots. Using my Canon 20D and 70-200mm F4 LSeries lens I was in the middle of the action.

My first ever Pow Wow did not disappoint. From the pageantry to the songs and the dancing. This was an event I will remember the rest of my life. The organizers were gracious and welcoming and let me shoot plenty of pictures. The dancers were fluid and passionate making every photo I took a work of art. There will be definitely more Pow Wows in my future. All pictures were taken with my Canon 20D using my 70-200mm F4 L Series lens. Post production was done in Photoshop CS3.

Irene Rodeo, Irene, South Dakota

Saturday night in Irene, South Dakota was Rodeo night this past weekend. The rodeo persevered through a torrential down pour, tornado warnings, and one crazy clown. The action was non-stop and the lighting conditions changed constantly keeping me on my toes. This rodeo was definitely worth the drive. I shot the rodeo with my Canon 20D and brand new lens, 70-200mm L Series F4. The lens did not disappoint as I caught many shots on the far end of the arena. One more outing and I should be completely comfortable with it. All post production was done in Photoshop CS3.

Demolition Derby- Highmore South Dakota

Demolition Derby time! While in town for the Highmore rodeo I noticed there was a demolition derby going on. How could I pass that up? When these guys drove these machines of destruction into the “pit” it was a twisted metal free for all. Radiators spewed, oil splattered, and a few tempers boiled over as the carnage took place. I was right there in the middle of it all with my Canon 20D dodging mud and debris. I did the post production in HDR, as I thought this was the only way to show the intensity of this event.

6th Annual Martin Bonnichsen Memorial Rodeo- Highmore, South Dakota

The 6th Annual Martin Bonnichsen Memorial Rodeo at Highmore, South Dakota took place this last weekend during the town’s Old Settler Days’ celebration. The day was clear and dry producing a dusty cowboy paradise. I attended the short program and had the thrill of capturing the cow punchers, ropers, and barrel racers. Using my 20D and usual assortments of lens I came up with these shots below. All post production was done with Photoshop CS3, non-destructively of course.
